There's this colleague (coordinates a group) who uses uppercase for emphasis. Very annoying. As if she's talking to inferiors. If you don't want to sound rude, stay clear of uppercase. Find another way to emphasize. And be nice to everyone, someday they might be your "superior".

Yeah right, the French complaining about English only communication. Makes the rest of us non-English, non-French feel... ugh #2018tef

  62. 08.11.2018 X

Let's talk about democratization of #MT building and training. Google, e.g., offers open-source tools. For the moment, it's for the experts and the rich (needs lots of GPU etc) #2018tef

  63. 08.11.2018 X

So, fellow #translators, make sure you stay up-to-date. Stop whining and complaining about machines stealing jobs and see what you can do to fit in the changing landscape https://twitter.com/emmabecciu/status/1060489142084272128

  64. 08.11.2018 X

#MT systems are not developed with the #translator in mind. And that's only natural. Their ultimate goal is to replace the intermediary between source and target #2018tef

  65. 08.11.2018 X

#NMT does not provide fuzzy matches for easy post-editing. Quality estimation is extremely difficult. We first need to become more confident in understanding NMT outputs #2018tef

  66. 08.11.2018 X

Does using #NMT need a different skillset from #MT? Translators don't need to learn how ot code (don't need to know how the motor works to drive a car). But it's a good idea to know the reality behind the hype #2018tef

  67. 08.11.2018 X

Most CAT tools presenting only one of the possible solutions? Not in my experience! #2018tef

  68. 08.11.2018 X

  69. 08.11.2018 X

  70. 08.11.2018 X

  71. 08.11.2018 X

#NMT working well with low resource scenarios (e.g. rare language pairs) #2018tef

  72. 08.11.2018 X

#NMT needs cleaner and in-domain data (less is more). Smart people are needed to manipulate the algorithms, look into the "black box" #2018tef

  73. 08.11.2018 X

#NMT Not a black box as long as there humans involved in the algorithms. You just can't trace a result easily #2018tef

  74. 08.11.2018 X

Didn't appreciate the speakers comment that "all maths and vectors are not for this audience, not for linguists" #2018tef

  75. 08.11.2018 X

#NMT another hype? My question too! #2018tef

  76. 08.11.2018 X

And now an all-male panel. This time started with a public comment on this. I look forward to the days these comments are totally irrelevant #2018tef

  77. 08.11.2018 X

Who likes doing repetitive tasks? These jobs are gone. Linguists and translators can adapt to new developments. In any case, humans should be in the loop (even for self-driving cars). We need a mindset that embraces change, keep training, make best use of AI #2018tef

  78. 08.11.2018 X

People noticed that the panel on #AI is all-female. I didn't. And I wouldn't if it was all-male. Does it even matter? Am I too used to seeing women in panels? #2018tef

  79. 08.11.2018 X

"Do not assume something is objective simply because it is #datadriven" Well, users of Facebook should know about #algorithm bias. But even with robust algorithms, data should be good too (not poorly selected, incomplete, outdated) #2018tef

  80. 08.11.2018 X

#AI in everyday life: We have enough regulations, do not need more. Trust is good, but proof of trust is better. Transparency algorithmic tools are needed: algorithms checking that other algorithms are doing what they are supposed to do #2018TEF

#Subtitling is indeed such a vulnerable mode of #translation. It sadly seems that non-#verbatim renderings (or non-literal translations) receive endless criticism from viewers who keep comparing with what they (half) understand in the audio.

#audiodescription Characters whose names have not yet been yet introduced are described according to hairstyle (dark-haired, long-haired, bald). Is this a norm a guideline or a rule? Weird opening scene in #sense8. Also found in #Extinction

  254. 27.07.2018 X

Text in the #subtitles should be segmented to keep syntactic phrases together. This is particularly important in the case of two clauses or sentences separated by a punctuation mark. It seems less important with verb phrases like auxiliary and main verb #subtitling #research https://twitter.com/ESIST_official/status/1022815112405630976
