A reflection on #untranslatability of words. Of course they can be translated, maybe not with a single word. Obviously, cultures have different neeeds and don't always create one specific word for a concept. Personally, I don't translate from languages I don't speak: it's not worth the risk or the extra amount of work. But people do, and it's a reality in the #subtitling industry. Let's ask companies to improve their workflows. And the #template quality https://twitter.com/pizzaroquette/status/1183717686120980480

  137. 14.10.2019 X

  138. 14.10.2019 X

Here's an example of terrible timing in a #subtitling #template: The utterance lasts 2,5 seconds and there is no pause or shot change. The author does not know (or bother) to fit it in one subtitle and creates two, affecting readability in all languages.

Hilo interesante sobre la #subtitulación y los signos de puntuación. Llevo mucho tiempo pensando en el tema, pero es más fácil seguir las reglas de los textos escritos que proponer otra cosa. #Roma #subtitles aftermath. Time to attack film titles. Not the translator's job. It's the distributor who decides, hence different decisions in different countries https://verne.elpais.com/verne/2019/01/15/mexico/1547520514_173827.amp.html

Discussing different client guidelines regarding profanity in #subtitling with a colleague. She is the sweetest, kindest lady. Our exchange on how to render motherfucker and cock felt a bit weird. But writing those uncensored subs feels natural. A matter of addressee, I guess

Spent past few days #subtitling a science fiction film with a disconcerting ending. Today reviewing a horror film. Wondering if there other jobs where you jump off your seat shit-scared.

Yay! I found a way to survive this (my normal anti-scare strategy of turning off the sound cannot be applied here). Watch the film in double speed, and the terror becomes comedy 😀
