I love being reminded of one of the most challenging films I have ever subtitled #Grinch.

#Subtitling is like working with dough. I let my subtitles rest for a day or two before refining them with a thorough review and simulation.

Is the battle already lost? Many translation buyers seem to think of #translation as nothing more than a literal - usually soulless - transfer of words from one language to the other.
How can we help the broader public understand that translation is precisely "embellishing the text to make it readable and in tune with the characters"? -
This space once brought me joy, learning & connections.
Now, despite my curation efforts, it's full of bots, ads & garbage.
Not deleting my account & hope others don't -#AcademicTwitter posts are cited in publications ✨- but I’ll be spending more time on BlueSky.
See you there! -

Delphine Thornton: At Hearst Networks they implemented #MTPE in subtitling and since there was no reactions by the audience, they went ahead.
Localization is the second largest cost in broadcast operations budget. Clarification: the second largest cost for the distributor, after purchasing the content.

If we don't care about communicating work that people understand, work that speaks to them, we have failed.

#Subtitles spark an international cabbage clash.
A #Netflix reality show has reignited tensions over the translation of "kimchi" in its Chinese subtitles. And even though Netflix changed the Chinese subtitles as per Korean demand, there was a Chinese backlash in response.

For the first time in more than 20 years, I declined a peer review request. The paper looked so enticing, I almost clicked on "yes", but I know I shouldn't. Family, paid work - and prior commitments with conferences - come first.
I will definitely come back to peer reviewing after Christmas!
-
The other day, a very experienced colleague and I were discussing the difference between mediocre #subtitles (correct but not truly fluent) vs excellent ones. What do you think, is it talent, or can it be learned? Surely, both, but what plays the bigger role, even slightly so?
-
#Subtitlers don't always get to work on great content, but this summer I got lucky with #ThePerfectCouple. Loved every minute of this classic whodunit.
And I couldn't be more thankful to the whole team.
PS: Not at all jealous of Nantucket beaches, the ones around here are much better 😂

Happy to share that I'll be speaking at #Language_Tech Patras 2024. I'll be joining in on the last day, but it's a whole three days full of discussions bringing together different people from different backgrounds.
Hope to see you there. -
The subtitlers I interviewed in 1999 didn't call it #latency, but explained the issue proved by Jan-Louis Kruger: Unless your eyes are glued to the bottom of the screen, they need time to perceive the presence of #subtitles. If they disappear before, they become #ghostsubtitles https://twitter.com/ASzarkowska/status/1810249119694254346

it has caused furor among translators (maybe they thought it was screenshots from actual subtitles?)

Along with #Dynasty and #Dallas, I grew up watching #Shogun. It must've been funny to hear Greek kids grunting "Anjin-san!" "Wakarimashita, Toronaga-sama!" during recess.
Now, a remake with #translation as a focal point.
Great for research in #L3AVT!

If there are #CC available, and you select dubbing with subtitles you get the #CC without the descriptive tags. A great solution.
The issue with the inadaquate dubbing script "subtitles" is immediately solved.
All content should have #CC available.

Words that should be banned from the #AVT/#subtitling/language industry:
👉Truncate: implies chopping off to shorten. Not what subtitlers do.
👉Talent pool: implies anonymity, no direct relationship, unequal terms. Trivializes talent.
👉Leverage: a fancy word for "use".
