#DeepHallucination is becoming relevant again. But now I'd make an important change in the definition: Detecting it is impossible or requires another AI.

Did you know that Greek is the only one of the EU’s 24 official languages in which the word for “Parliament” does not derive from the parl-/parli- root? (Κοινοβούλιο).
I only noticed myself today. Happy European Day of Languages!

I've now finished reading all the abstracts from all the Languages and the Media conferences since 1996. I confirmed some of the trends I suspected, but there were some surprises too. What can we learn from the past?
Can't wait to present my findings in London!

Do watch Marina's latest episode, to find out about research in cultural representations in LLMs.
And if you have questions about the background landscape, let me know 😁

Today, I had to subtitle this utterance:
It's a big bullshit.
The translator job is a big bullshit.Pretty shocking, but the speaker didn't mean it that way. More about it when the documentary is out.
-
You know how subtitlers can immediately spot the words to remove when we need to make dialogue concise, easy to digest? It's like a reflex.
Well, knowing exactly which those words are means that, when the task is reversed, we can add the right kind of padding to make an otherwise perfectly concise utterance longer.

Shortsighted localization enterprises think the tech stack is the moat. Maybe it used to be.
Today's smart leaders surround themselves with experts. Treat them well and brag about them.
They also take good care of their tech, of course.Been thinking about that for a long time, but today's post was inspired by Justin Beaudin.

There is a quiet shifting everywhere. And everyone is sitting with it. Exchange an f for a t, add an h - and you have the solution for everything. 💩

- Mom, do you write anything you want in the subtitles?
- Yes.
- Does anybody check them before they're out?
- Not always.
- I see a marketing opportunity here.
- ??!!He didn't stick around for the discussion around #QA, #ethics and #accountability. He didn't explain his plan either.

Intermediate tokens.
That's the term to use instead of AI "reasoning" or "thinking".
Machines don't think, they don't even simulate thinking. They produce intermediate tokens and outputs (code, text, images).13 June 2026

The poor T-word, everybody has been avoiding it for years now, professionals, companies, university departments, all dropping it. I guess a few theorists will keep using it, and maybe we'll become trendy one day. Like philosophers.

Every time I read about a quiet shift quietly shifting, I sing with Björk. Can OpenAI do with quiet shifts what they did with ogres and goblins? And bring ogres back? I prefer them.

Me in 2036: "Remember when 'AI adoption' used to mean 'chatting with a bot'? And that's how researchers measured it?"
PS: Psomoula says Hi.

Did you know that the #LanguagesAndTheMedia conference used to have a multilingual title? The conference languages were English, French and German.
Thanks to Wayback Machine we have access to the first conference website in 2000 announcing its third edition. Registration price was in Deutsche Mark.

Ser invitada a un congreso tan importante que atrae una audiencia tan numerosa es un honor y una responsabilidad que asumo con compromiso.

Feliç Diada de Sant Jordi! Celebrating with a rose and the first book on #AudiovisualTranslation I ever bought.
It so happened that today I got accepted to present "Thirty Years of Languages and the Media: How the Conference Discourse Has Evolved (1996–2026)" at the Languages & The Media conference in London.

Εκπαίδευση ΚΑΡΠΑ στο Computer Technology Institute and Press “DIOPHANTUS” (CTI).
It doesn't navigate anymore nor delve. It *quietly* shifts and it compounds. Or it doesn't shift. It compounds.
And it's oh so dramatic.

Same for AI-translated books.

Do you want to stand out on LinkedIn? This app's for you. Now, which direction would you use it in?
-
Now it's been more than two months since #ChatGPTtranslate was discovered by users, still no announcement by OpenAI. Probably about to be "quietly" abandoned? The chances of finding out why Greek is not included among the source or target languages are getting slimmer. The weirdest part is that the page itself is localized in many languages, Greek included.

For those who don't know, #enshittification was coined by Cory Doctorow to describe the predictable decline of digital platforms over time.

Audiences are shaping the media production - and localisation - industry. If they find a new technique jarring, they stop watching. In this case, synthetic faces and voices are used in a documentary to anonymise victims. The AI use is transparent. But emotions are an issue, and viewers quit watching. If the numbers are high, the practice will be abandoned or changed.

Quick question: anybody here who is both optimistic about the future and resistant to AI?

Sometimes it feels like terms related to human activity are being hijacked by AI discourse. We now have to add modifiers to words like skill. “How to develop skills” can mean something entirely different depending on the context.
In AI contexts, “skills” often refers to structured sets of instructions or prompts for repeated processes.

For some, Harlequin was never about real literature anyway, but translators used to be considered authors. Now they'll become posteditors, no translator credit.
I wonder if the publisher is considering using AI to write the original work too 🤔
HarperCollins to use AI to translate romance novels under the Harlequin and Azur series
