Anybody watching this with me? #subtitling #dubbing technologies European Film Forum BERLIN https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w95WcZBMenQ&fbclid=IwAR0QSgEh51KtHH_Km2h-zEopo0cbPPV8iGyarprDLFcIrNiZIlHKnZmIN6A

#EuropeanFilmForum One of the speakers said that #subtitling is a routine task and as a news media agency they prefer to invest their money on journalists who produce new content. Caused an uproar in the audience

Computer Assisted Subtitling has its struggles. See more here https://traco.uni-mainz.de/2018/04/17/compass-computer-assisted-subtitling/

Representative from https://mubi.com/ says #subtitling cost is too high to support for all languages. #MEDIA programme helped them to finance it. They are also looking to implement speech-to-text technologies to lower prices, increase productivity #EuropeanFilmForum

However, according to Annemie Degryse, Producer, Lumière, if you consider it as part of the marketing in each territory, #subtitling is a minor cost. Unlike #dubbing #EuropeanFilmForum

As for synthetic speech, for the #blind it's an important #accessibility feature, better than nothing. Text-to-speech will be more widely-used in the future. Blending human and technology is the future *more audience uproar* (lots of subtitlers in the audience) #EuropeanFilmForum

If you do #subtitling for less than €10 per minute, you can't make a living, according to one of the speakers at #EuropeanFilmForum. But this leads to a too high a cost. The audience answered that we should fight for bigger budgets. Speakers don't find it viable.

Subtitling company rep says that human intervention will always be needed. Thanks to technology, #subtitlers will become editors, able to produce more. But what's wrong is that 60% of the film revenue comes from abroad, but only 0.6% of the cost goes to localization.

Pay-per-subtitle project is now presented by the audience, where viewers would pay for the subtitles if they want to use them. (What a horrible idea. Transferring the cost of the subtitle to the end user?) #EuropeanFilmForum

But thinking about it, maybe it's a good idea. If you are stingy and you don't want to pay extra for the subtitles, then you need to learn the language. 😂

My take-away from the discussion in #EuropeanFilmForum. There is more and more content available in more and more territories needing more and more #translation. Also, that we are NOT in a transition period (no start and end), it's a constant process. Probably faster than before

And that the world is divided between the "arties" who rebuff translation technology and the "techies" that tell them that it's the future and they should stop sticking their head in the sand.
