As @JorgeDiazCintas pointed out at #m4a8, #Netflix seems to monopolize discussions and controversy on #AVT choices

And, once again, it seems that #AVT decisions were not made by @netflix themselves. I admire the way they seem to respect directors/creators/producers" choices. Would the fans react the same way if they knew that? https://twitter.com/andreareventon/status/1142353625513177089?s=19

And the previous translator's take on the #Evangelion controversy. The one that for some fans did a better job.

2/4 Suki is an inherently vague word. The image could also be confusing to people not familiar with Japanese culture (Do people often share a bath-tub? And what does it mean when people hold hands?)

3/4 Should the target-language dialogue always be representative of what someone from an the target culture would say in that situation? Or should it aim to retain the emotional characteristics of the ST speaker (esp. when conversation is between two Japanese in Japan)?

4/4 Amanda Winn Lee was pretty pissed with the whole story (she was the dubbing and sound director on AD Vision’s release of the Eva TV series and English scriptwriter for the company’s Death and Rebirth and End of Evangelion releases)

If the English redub story was interesting, the Italian is fascinating. Dub writer #Cannarsi has been fiercely criticised for his literal rendering. Netflix chose the expert in japanese anime for Italian but the backlash was enough to bring it down. An re-redub is being made now.
Cannarsi explains his decisions. He had made the first dub (the one with the Angels) and now realized it was all wrong. 20 years later - with more experience and knowledge of Japanese - he decided to redub them as Apostles. And all hell broke loose. https://tv.badtaste.it/2019/06/neon-genesis-evangelion-angeli-o-apostoli-gualtiero-cannarsi-ci-spiega-il-suo-nuovo-adattamento-per-netflix/
