A thread on subtitling good practices that have been misinterpreted as hard and fast rules. Seems that dubbing countries like Spain and France are obsessed with shot changes. Unfortunately, this has been endorsed by international companies, thus affecting national practices.
Danish, Norwegian guidelines are similar to Greek practices: readability is king. Too short and badly divided subtitles impede it.
It's advisable to follow shot changes but not at the expense of readability. Priorities change in each and every subtitle. Even for cps.
A long but simple sentence will take less time to read than a short but complicated one with unusual words or abbreviations.
Priorities and restrictions are things that experienced subtitlers know how to handle. You cannot easily put them into "rules" to follow blindly.
We see an increasing use of words such as "truncating", when the point is not to mutilate the meaning but condense and synthesise in annelegantvway.
And that's why training is needed.
Of course the typo is very elegant 😂
