The subtitles' writer is a journalist (旁白鴿) who was contacted as an expert (even though he admits not working on subtitles for 10 years).
As he explains in a lengthy FB post, he worked hard on this film, did a lot of research, and found the task really challenging.

Viewers criticized him for "over-translating".
Controversial decisions included changing
“Just be a rock” in English to “You are now Wang An Shi”
or “Unlovable bitches” in English to “Wu Zetian", referring to the ancient Chinese empress regarded as a symbol of women’s power.
