#Iyuno has recently published a white paper including their take on #translatorshortage #subtitlershortage.
"There have been some recent reports in the media that the reason for the shortage is low pay.

"Certainly, every person that works for a living deserves the right to strive for better compensation, and the market will always settle at a market rate following the supply and demand principles that drive all commercial markets.

"We have never seen a #subtitler do a lesser job because they want more pay. What we do see and want is to improve the efficiency of their workday by using tools and giving subtitlers more time to spend on creative tasks and less on the mundane.

"To that end, we continue to invest in tools and process improvements to help make the best use of their time.

"The supply shortage will eventually correct as more translators enter the market and the surge in demand due to the simultaneous launching of streaming services slows down.

"Even if pay were to increase, it would not address the shortage in the short term since it takes time to recruit, test and train new translators."

And here is what @ATRAE_ORG has to say about it. Inter alia: the lower the rate, the more subtitlers have to translate in less time to earn a livable wage. No review or simulation of the final product, hence lower quality.
