When asked about the challenge of condensing in #subtitling:
Can you hear me cracking my knuckles in giddy anticipation? I love condensing, it often makes the text better, I promise you. 1/5
it's all about prioritizing: looking at the picture, listening to the tone of the voice, reading the context, remembering previous interactions. 2/5
What would really hinder comprehension and nuance if omitted? Any shorter synonyms? How can I paraphrase? It's the reason many of us are so into subtitling, it's the challenge, the σπαζοκεφαλιά ("headbreaker" literally in Greek) 3/5
I would actually omit so many subtitles we are forced to include (Hi! Help! Mat! for the nth time) and would let the viewers enjoy more of the image. 4/5
And even if we set guidelines and preferences, there are so many exceptions and really no hard and fast rules (except for cpl). It's all about subtitle-per-subtitle decisions. That's why I believe in the future of our job despite AI advances 😊 5/5
