Discussions among professionals and researchers often focus on the artistic side of #subtitling. Is it an #art? What role does #creativity play?
Subtitling isn’t about artistic freedom; it’s about solving complex puzzles. We’re working with rigid constraints: faithfulness to the original dialogue, maintaining tone, aligning with the visual context, and fitting everything into limited space.
#Creativity is centered around #imagination. It's the ability to generate ideas, concepts, or solutions that are novel and original by drawing from one’s inner mental landscape. Imagination fuels creativity by allowing us to envision possibilities beyond reality: How would this character say this in this situation in the target language? How will the audience feel? What is the creative team's intent?
#CreativityInSubtitling comes not from invention but from finding clever, adaptive solutions to make the audience feel like nothing’s lost, all while working within these constraints. Subtitlers aren't creating something new, but they bring a sharp, adaptive mindset.
