Translators are speaking up about their work being scraped or reused without permission from the creators or rights holders.
This isn’t new. Film #subtitles, for example, have been used to train language tech systems for over 20 years, for machine translation, dialogue agents, lexicography, you name it. Subtitles have always been easy to get, come in lots of languages, and are already aligned. Just look at #OpenSubtitles.
What is new is that translators are joining the louder voices of writers and other creatives. But the stakes are different. Plus, publishing houses and large newspapers can file lawsuits. Freelancers? Not so much.
