Children smoked before the health risks of smoking were proven. Smoking was a symbol of maturity and sophistication. It was normal family life for some. Of course there were the anti-tobacco people and endless debates between extremists. Early scientists were searching for a connection between smoking and higher intelligence.

What does it feel like when you have no idea about the potential risks of something? You do it because everybody does.  Some people get cancer, some don’t. You see those who get sick, but don’t connect it to smoking. Only later, when scientists start to speak up and institutions issue warnings does the danger become real.
